3 Ways McCormick is Committed to Purpose-led Performance

At McCormick, we believe that in addition to enriching lives through flavor experiences, we have a responsibility to contribute to the vitality of people, the communities where we live, work, and source, and the planet we all share. We believe in delivering industry-leading financial performance while doing what’s right, and we call this belief “Purpose-led Performance.” It’s one of our core principles, and it guides everything we do.

In 2017 we issued our first Purpose-led Performance Report where summarized our efforts to improve human health and well-being, to build vibrant communities, and to have a positive impact on the planet. The report also announced goals that we aspire to meet by 2025. These goals, informed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, are an expression of our ongoing commitment to our Purpose-led Performance principle, and they’re organized under three categories: People, Communities, and Planet.

Since 2017, we’ve become a much larger company with the largest acquisition in our history, which brought Frank’s and French’s, formerly owned by Reckitt Benckiser, into our brand portfolio. Even with our larger footprint, we’re moving steadily toward our 2025 goals. We know there’s work yet to be done in a few critical areas, but we know we’re up to the task, because we’ve already made significant progress. Here’s a look at some of what we’ve accomplished so far:

People

The cornerstone of McCormick’s approach is helping people live better lives. Our business champions diversity and inclusion and is committed to the education, development, and well-being of our employees, while working to create better health outcomes. More specifically:

  • We’ve increased representation of women and ethnically diverse talent in leadership positions throughout our organization, including our Board of Directors
  • To improve better health outcomes, we’ve increased our McCormick Science Institute public research citations on the health benefits of herbs and spices by over 50%
  • A significant percentage of our global products now include health & wellness information and claims on the package to help improve transparency.

Communities

The communities where we live, work and source are the bedrock of our success. We’re dedicated to improving lives across our supply chain, whether it’s helping farming communities build and adapt to change, or by supporting charitable giving efforts and engaging in volunteer work. More specifically:

  • Through our partnerships with NGO’s, we’re working with almost 16,000 farmers across the globe who grow our raw materials to increase their resilience, providing them with essential agricultural training, technology and financing support to help them thrive.
  • We’ve introduced Grown for Good, McCormick’s sustainable sourcing framework, which is the first-ever sustainability certification program in the herb & spice industry and goes beyond current industry standards.

Planet

We’re committed to lessening the effects of climate change by adhering to Science Based Targets that help reduce our carbon emissions, energy consumption, waste, and water use. To achieve our goals, we’ve increased the use of renewable energy, invested in improved technologies, and are in the process of embedding sustainable practices across the enterprise. More specifically:

  • 84% of our current plastic packaging can be recycled, reused, or repurposed.
  • Through an agreement with the Skipjack Solar Center in Virginia, we will power our Maryland and New Jersey facilities with 100% renewable energy by 2022
